Limited visibility

It was foggy this morning when I got up:

No, seriously. I'm not kidding:

It was really, really foggy:

Can you see Kai and the donkeys?:

How about now?:

There, that's better:

I almost couldn't see the barn at the top of the hill:

From the deck, all looked good down at the chicken coop...er..wait:

1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8 and Dottie standing in the door to the run makes 9... I can only see my nine chickens... and not the three new girls:

Down I run, as fast as I can, to see what evil things my girls may have done to the timid trio:

Just as I am about to open the coop door, Skippy comes flying out the small pop-hole door from the coop, tearing through the run like her tiny pants were on fire:

She flew immediately up to her safety spot, the roost at the end of the run:

Ok, now I've accounted for ten chickens...two to go.
Ah, *there* you two are...hiding under the nest box. Well, at least you're on the ground today. Carry on, girls:

I walked down the hill to say hi to the donkey/llama group and arrived just in time to see Chester and Kai having angry words (See the looks they're giving each other? Reminds me of Mrs. Potato Head with her "angry eyes"):

The moment passed quickly, but you can see that Chester tends to be a bit of a grudge holder:

As I walked up to the barn, I called out my greetings to Reggie. Sound carries differently in the fog and he seemed so far away:

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of fog. I don't really like not being able to see what lies ahead, literally and figuratively.

The animals, though? As long as breakfast is on time, they don't seem to care much either way.

  1. fog obscures ones eyes
    or adds thrills to dreams
    reverberates sounds
makes things appear other than they seem

    can be caused by alcohol
or moisture thick in the air
    can coat things in dew
    like goat and donkey hair

    in rain or gloom
    the fog can get thicker
and maybe cause one to confuse
a real bird with a sticker.....

  2. I also hate the fog...I feel boxed in. It has been foggy here the last few days and I feel like I'm crawling out of my skin. Hoping the chickens start getting along.

  3. Hi! Just to let you know since you commented the commenting, that I've got this blog on my browser quick links and visit every morning when i'm drinking my coffee. Reading this blog assures me that the critter farm could be reality to me as well. Someday, in hopefully near future. My current job is very stressful and I'm not sure how long I'll be able to carry on, but visiting this blog gives me energy to start the day so that I can save some from my salary for my own critter farm. I know it's a lot of work to do blogging like you do, with pictures and everything, but I'm really grateful that you do it!

  4. Wonderful post. Fog is kind of spooky. Makes you want to look behind you as you walk out to feed the animals, doesn't it? I get use to it around here. We have had more than usual this year. The goats don't like it either. The chickens are quieter when it's foggy.
Love the donkey discussion. Maybe they were talking about the weather.
I'm glad the chicks were OK. You just never know what can happen.

  5. No, I think it was the fog that put the donkeys into a foul humor. I suspect that they don't like it either.

I wonder what set Skippy's bloomer afire?

I have a feeling that your coop and run are a good design- do you mind posting pictures? I'm looking for ideas.

  7. The fog in the trees is pretty. I'll bet it does sound strange with all that fog though. I'm glad your new hens are moving around some now. They'll be part of the chicken gang soon.

  8. I have to admit I peed a little when I got to the pants on fire part. :) Poor thing.

  9. "like her tiny pants were on fire"..LOL!!
Maybe the fog is making all the animals grumpy. I hope it lifts soon.

  10. I like fog as long as i don't have to drive in it! It feels so soft on my skin. We have more foggy days here in the late Winter, early Spring. Yesterday i noticed the color of the light is changing ever so slightly...Spring is coming around the corner!

  11. Ears back is sure not a good look for a donkey isn't it? lol

  12. I like the strange feeling you get when it's all foggy outside, like another world, the damp not so much. Like seeing your pictures with no snow though, it reminds me what the world looks like without it! :)

  13. It was crazy foggy last night when I was out. I don't much like the fog either, especially when I'm driving and things (read: other cars) are coming up on me fast.

I thought Kai was an elk there, for a second. *grin*

  14. Ohhh, Chai Chai...I laughed and laughed at your poem. Thank you so much. And I'm really glad that we're both on the same page with those bird decals on my door now. :-)

Hi Teresa! Still foggy here today, though not as bad as yesterday. Now the rain is supposed to hit. Wouldn't it be fun to have a few sunny days?

Hey Em - Thank you so much for telling me this - it makes me feel really good. And keep the faith... I was in exactly your shoes not all that long ago - stuck in a very stressful job and dreaming of a life with animals. You can make this happen!

Hi farmlady - I just love your profile picture that pops up when you post comments - I'm dreaming of sunny days like that!

Hey Paula - I've got a whole series of photos already posted (just for you! lol). If you go to the sidebar on my blog and click on the tag "chicken coop" and then keep clicking "show older posts" at the top of the page, you'll be able to find - from the beginning - the planning and building of my chicken coop. Also within that tag is how we built the chicken run, too, though it came a couple months after the coop. Let me know if you don't find what you would like to see and I will post specific pictures of that for you.

Hi Jaz - I would love to know how long it's going to take for all those girls to get along, too! lol
I just didn't think they'd be able to keep up the "cold front" for this long, you know? :-)

Hi Brenda - From your lips to their ears.... every morning I say to them: "Why can't we all just get along?!" :-)

  15. Haaaa...Christine! You're funny!

Hi Cee Cee - I heard that it was actually sunny for the better part of the day yesterday in Portland, so you can imagine how grouchy this made ME feel, let alone the critters. :-)

Hi Mare!! Yes, I've been having to do more than a little bit of driving in this foggy stuff, too. Last night, it was THICK! And yes...spring thoughts!! I noticed over the weekend that it was 5:00pm and NOT AT ALL DARK YET - Yay!!

Hey Tina - Right? ha ha. Of course, I think Chester's adorable no matter what, but he can have quite the attitude.

Well, hello there, luckybunny. :-) Thanks for commenting! Yeah, we've not gotten nearly as much snow this year as weather predictions were forecasting. Of course, now I've probably jinxed us and we'll get a massive February snow. eek. Here's wishing you some warmer days!

Hey Carolynn - my husband said the exact same thing about Kai looking like an elk! How funny. Glad she wasn't, though - I hear those buggers are really hard on fencing. lol

  16. The one thing that I like about fog is taking pictures in it. You can get some really lovely animal shots on a foggy morning.

    Driving? Not so much!

  17. Jeez, Louise... that's one serious look on Chester's face. I don't want him on my bad side... :D

I love the last picture in this post.

  18. Clearly your timid trio is making brave inroads. Patience seems to be in order here.
And your four-legged disputers are hilarious. Their faces are so expressive. I'm almost positive they'll consider human language any day now.

  19. I don't mind the fog as long as I am not driving in it. We've had sunny days for a week, until this afternoon. It's getting cold and grey out there again.

    Loved that poem above.

  20. I love all your photos. You have nice trees that look good in the background of all your photos especially those foggy ones. Here at the Tumbleweed Crossing there is nothing that looks good in the background of my photos. Dirt and more dirt. Sand and more sand. And someone elses house. I keep trying but they all look the same.
