Hurray (Oh No!!), it's finally here!

Look what I picked up today. At long last, the book I've been on the waiting list for at my library for almost six months has finally arrived!

I'm very excited to start it. I love being absorbed in a good book and I'm always on the search for engrossing fiction books with strong character development. I also have a growing love for memoirs of all kinds.

For now, I'll just put it on my nightstand right ...here...uhhhhh, uh oh.

My county library system apparently has a sense of humor. It seems that ALL the books I've been on the waiting list for, regardless of where I was on that list, have all come in for me at the SAME time.

And I've only got 3 weeks to read them all.
If you don't hear from me for a while, at least you'll have a pretty good guess as to how I'm spending my free time.

I love hearing about what other people are reading and seeing their want-to-read lists. Here's what's on my nightstand currently, if you're interested and can't make out the titles in the photo:

The Cookbook Collector, by Allegra Goodman
Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void, by Mary Roach
Roses Love Garlic: Companion Planting and Other Secrets of Flowers, by Louise Riotte
Mennonite in a Little Black Dress: A Memoir of Going Home, by Rhoda Janzen
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake: A Novel, by Aimee Bender
Simply from Scratch, by Alicia Bessette
How to be an American Housewife, by Margaret Dilloway
The Help, by Kathryn Stockett
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, by Max Brooks (on loan to me from a friend, not a library book)
Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship, by Gail Caldwell

  1. Ooh, as a cookbook collector, you'll have to let me know how that novel is! I need more fiction in my life. :)

    Now go start reading!

  2. Postpone World War Z. I have a copy I can send. It is a kick-ass book though. Even though on the surface it's about "the zombie apocalypse" in truth, it's about the world's response to emergencies. And it's not purty. But a very definite "MUST READ". Let me know and I'll remember which stack it's in. ;)

  3. ps - thought of you http://www.petapixel.com/2010/12/29/further-research-into-using-chickens-as-steadicams/

in case you need to earn some extra money, you could hire them out to Hollywood.

ps. you don't have to pay me for this brilliant idea. it's totally free. :)

  4. You've sure got a lot of reading to do! Good thing it's winter. Chilly weather is a good time to curl up with a good book. .... or in my case ... the goats out in the kidding pens. :D

  5. Some of these books look intriguing. I don't read lots of books and that pile on your nightstand would take me a year but I'm intrigued by a book with the name < THE PARTICULAR SADNESS OF LEMON CAKE> OR < ROSES LOVE GARLIC>
I must look these two up.
    Enjoy your reading....

  6. You left out The Help, which I started at Mom's over Christmas, and have on hold with my library system!

  8. My stack is that high Danni...if only I could get back into the reading habbit. It's an odd list. And touchy. One of them is "The Forgotten Man" A New History of the Great Depression by Amity Shlaes. Thanks for kicking me in the butt to get reading.

  9. I see 'The Help' on your nightstand but it's not on your list. Best book ever written.

  10. I am always on the lookout for a good book. I seldom find them. Thanks so much for the ideas. I think you mentioned The Help in my blog.
Yes, your library must think you have hours and hours on your hands.

  12. Hi Meadowlark!! Your comment reminded me that the copy of WWZ I have is on loan to me from a friend and *not* a library book (I've updated the post to include that now) - thanks so much for your offer, though - I love book-swapping with friends!
Loved the videos about chicken steadicams - I've noticed this about their heads before - super cool, huh? And I promise, if I ever make any money from using my chickens in this way, you will DEFINITELY get a cut of the profits. Because that's just the kind of gal I am. ;-)

Thanks for the "catch", Paula and 7MSN - I've updated my post to include my omission of The Help! I've heard it is a magnificent book.

Libbie - You are amazing! I can't believe you found something so quickly - an email is on its way to you. :-)

  13. THE HELP is the best book I read All Year, and I read a LOT. DK, have you joined Goodreads? I love that site. I get to see what everyone else is reading, and what they thought about books. A Great Site for Readers. Read The Help. You will love it, ;-)

  15. I don't read much, but I did read "The Help" and couldn't put it down, it's a great book. Your pile would just overwhelm me, but I do love to read books which are biographical in nature. But some of your titles are intriguing and I just may have to give one or two of them a try! Thanks!

  16. I love to read, and I like holding a real BOOK in my hand, not ready for a Kindle. I hate to tell ya what's on my nightstand now though, books about prison life. I'm trying to learn what my nephew can expect. :-(

  17. I have stacks of books like that all over my house. Mostly non-fiction though. I enjoy reading, but rarely sit still long enough to make time for it. My favorite fictional works of late are the Judith Ryan Hendricks novels. I especially enjoy the food centered ones with recipes. When is her new one coming out?

  18. I vote for The Help! It is a wonderful, and fact-based story. You will cry and laugh throughout the entire book.

  19. That always happens to me! The holds always come in at the same time. Lemon cake was an interesting book. Let me know what you think of the others. I'm always looking for a book I can lose myself in.
