One other sign that spring is on its way

Roopert, my rooster, starts jumping me:

He sneaks up behind me, when he thinks I'm not looking, and attacks my boots:

This boy, who I've lovingly, adoringly, and gently hand-raised since he was a day-old chick, thinks I'm after his girls:

So I grab him and cuddle him:

He really hates this:

Butthead.

  2. I grew up with a horribly evil rooster... No matter how much we handled him and loved him, he wanted to kill us at every single moment...

  3. Rooper is a beautiful rooster!! But my favorite pictures are your walks down the road with your goats from Friday!! They look like they are doing a waltz -- put a couple of tutus on them :-}}}}

  4. Now thats the nicest way to show a rooster who's boos I've ever seen!

  5. I've heard roosters are dangerous. You'd think they'd know after so many days and months, that you mean no harm.
I hope I can be strong like that when I have chickens, otherwise we'll be eating a lot of roosters...

    Have a great day!

  6. Those roosters. We had chickens that were also hand raised when I was young. The roosters always got protective and stalked me once they grew up. Guess it's good since they protect the flock, but it use to drive me crazy when I had to go pick up the eggs.

  8. Ah yes, makes me miss my old roo Bob. He would sit in my lap to be petted but would sneak up and attack me from behind too. Crazy rooster.

  9. Very cute. We don't have a rooster - sometimes I wish we did (like when we are raising a new batch of chicks by hand instead of letting a hen do it). He's beautiful - Barred Rock?

  10. If you've posted closeups of Roopert before, I must have missed them because surely I would have remembered that amazing comb and waddle. Holy moly.

  11. He may be a butthead, but he's a handsome fella. How do you get him to stand still for photos? Whenever I want to take photos of my hens, they are all over the place!

  12. I have the same problem, looks like I may have to try and give him the cuddle treatment too! Of course with how jealous the animals are around here they may all decide to attack me so they have to be cuddled too.

  13. We have never had a mean roo. I think if we did then there would be chicken soup that evening. We just ordered 2 Buff roos with Buff hens. We think Roo needs some help and I want chicks. Tell Roopert a little bed time story about warm stock pots. ;)

  14. As much as I want chickens like yours, I do not want a Roopert...I am not a fan of the rooster...been there, done that on my grandfather's farm. Yikes!

  15. Dear Butthead:
Momma's gonna hold you and love you and squeeze you and feed you.....and because of your testosterone poisoning....well nevermind you can't help yourself.

  16. The rooster I used to have, Frasier, was beautiful and usually pretty gentle with me (not so gentle with my hens), but he did fly up at me and launch a face to face assault a few times. Gotta watch those guys. Their spurs can do some damage.

  17. You have to let him know who's boss! He is!

  18. Oh, Roopert, when you're so beautiful you can get away with darn near anything.

  19. We had a rooster that attacked both Joe and Michael, many a time I would laugh at him chasing Michael around the paddock! The day he attacked me he was curry by teatime! ;-D

  20. What a handsome rooster! He looks quite regal.

We once had a young rooster that like to chase anyone who came around the barn. We gave him to a neighbor where he grew into the most cantankerous, mean fellow that you didn't dare turn your back on. I should say, the rooster was cantankerous...not the neighbor! :)

Who knew a little bird could contain such fury!

  21. Rupert really is quite handsome. This time of year brings out the worst in my Duke, too. Of my four roosters, he's the only one that has ever been aggressive towards me. I've vowed that this is the last year I'll tolerate him. I vowed that last year, too. Dangit.

Heaven as my witness, my WP is "testoste", and I'm not even kidding! HA!

  22. Just one of the many reasons why goats are better than chickens.
