Augtober

They've created a new month for us here in Oregon. It's called Augtober. This is what the weather people are calling it on the NW Oregon news. Practically overnight, we've gone from record highs surpassing 100 degrees to temperatures in the 40's and 50's at night and only low 60's during the day. After not having had rain for over a month, we've been hit hard with a series of storms that have us shaking our heads.

First we had crazy thunder and lightning:

I say it was crazy because our part of the state rarely has thunderstorm activity, so this was big news for us:

After I read the online news about staying in my house or car, I went outside and dug potatoes, snipped basil, picked a few beans:

gathered a couple handfuls of blueberries:

and (literally) a bucketful of shelling peas:

Ha, ha! I laugh in the face of storm danger! (Probably not very smart of me.)

The exciting thunder and lightening activity has since ceased, however the rain has picked up. We're getting lots of it. This is what I woke up to this morning:

The donkeys are not happy:

They tend to get these cute little hair spikes up top when it has rained on their heads:

This seems to just make them grumpier.

The forecast says it's supposed to clear up and be in the 90's again by the weekend. As dusk fell, the sun peeked through the clouds just before it went behind the mountain range:

  1. Wow. You have a lot of rain up there. We had cooler weather here the past few days, but no rain. Your property is so beautiful. I love seeing pictures and videos of it on your blog.

By the way, I turned 48 yesterday, August 19th. I will post some photos on my blog about it tomorrow. Been too busy today. I hope you don't mind me teasing with you about my birthday date. You Pisces are very curious and sneaky. I had to make Bob swear not to tell you. (he's Pisces too)

  2. I love the grumpy donks with their hair spikes. They look so silly! Their eyes seem to be accusing you for the yucky rain and lack of sunshine. Did you tell them about the impending change of weather? It's only 10:35pm, and you should go out and tell them.

  3. I'm so out of touch - I haven't seen the news in ages, and I'm just laughing out loud over the new term for what it is we're experiencing weather-wise. Augtober indeed! Doesn't that just say it all?!

It will be interesting to see how the balance of the summer plays out! BTW, I'm with the donkeys - I'm a little grumpy, too! I hate that! Not my normal demeanor!

  4. It's been a crazy summer Danni! I had my comforter on two nights in a row and almost all summer have had sweatshirts on almost everyday!! Well, we can't complain too much my step-mom has had Fay parked over her house for 3 days!!!

  5. I love rain. I think I could just dub your movie over and over until it's about 30 minutes long, and then sooth myself to sleep with it. A cure for my insomnia! Yay!

  6. You know, I never really took all the lightening warnings that seriously, and then 3 weeks ago, one of my dear friends was literally blown off a picnic table and lost consciousness when lightening struck a tree 15 feet away. Her brother, also blown off the picnic table, had holes burned in his shoes. They were camping in the deep woods and had nowhere to go. Yikes!

So, be careful and NO METAL BUCKETS!
    hugs,
    Ali

  7. The warning to stay in your house because of the thunderstorm was funny to me. Sorta like when it snows in the south...they dont really know what to do.....

All that rain has to be good for your garden tho.

Poor, soggy donks. They look just, well, unhappy.

  9. Ahhhhh Augtober......:) Isn't it lovely? Well, it's what keeps our part of WA and OR as green as it is. I'm kind of a weather wussy... I like it around 60-70 degrees, no warmer, no cooler. I get sick of the rain in the winter but don't like those 90+ days either. Must be getting picky in my old age!

  10. I actually love a good thunderstorm. Especially when the thunder rattles my bones. We don't get them very often either here on the coast where I live.

Rain, on the other hand, you can have. I detest rain. In fact, your grumpy critters are doing a very fine imitation of me, when it rains. Right down to the spikey hair bits sticking up on the top of my head. I can so relate with you sista!

  11. You need a goat to teach the donkeys to go in the barn when it rains. We goats absolutely do not DO rain.

  12. WOW, that's some rain! Daisy actually enjoys rain sometimes...she'll stand in the woods in her paddock (which aren't that dense as she's chewed and killed most of the trees so there are no leaves) and just get soaked...although, I admit, most of the time she goes in her barn :-P.

The donkeys are SOOOO cute! I want one! :D

  13. PLEASE send us that rain! We haven't had rain in so long that I can stick my feet in the cracks in the dirt. I'm afraid one of my chooks will fall into one and not be able to get back out! Those donks sure do not look pleased about their predicament. I thought equines liked rain!

  14. That rain was weird.I almost took video of it too. It seemed so at odds with the crazy 100 degree weather we had just had. My tomatos will never ripen unless it heats up a bit. Arg.

  15. Those donkeys look so sad! I hope the weather improves and cheers them up :)
We are dealing with tropical storm Fay here, so If I had donkeys I ma sure mine would be sad now too!
