You can't wrap breakables in online news...

And so, the countdown begins. The final details of our move were locked down yesterday. Closing dates on both houses have been set, the mover has been scheduled. We've got two weeks. It's time for me to get a serious start on packing.

I started out strong this morning, taping the bottoms of boxes, identifying which cupboard I would begin to pack first, and then, as I reached for the first item, a glass serving tray, I noticed a problem. I had nothing to wrap it in. That old reliable, reusable newspaper pile was conspicuously absent from my packing materials. During our last move, nine years ago, this was never a problem. We had tons of it. However, we don't get our news this way anymore. Long ago, we became members of the ever-growing group of I.N.R.'s (Internet News Readers). The occasional Sunday New York Times we get for a lazy-day-in-bed treat (seems like a while since we had one of those)gets recycled the very next day with the garbage pick-up.

And so, all my good intentions for today are momentarily stalled as I sit here and decide what to do next. I know, I thought to myself, I'll blog about it!

So what's a girl to do? Neighbors are all at work - no luck there. If you happened to see my earlier post about paper towels (yes, I actually wrote an entire post about them), you'll know that it is not even a remote option for me to use those. I've given the garage a serious once-over for potential glassware protection - nothing there. Can't use our cloth towels, we still need them. Am I seriously supposed to go out and buy $10 worth of today's paper?

A better idea yet, I'm thinking, is to make a cup of tea, curl up with the new blanket my mom knitted me (oh, and my dog, apparently, who inserted herself just before I snapped this picture), and read my new library books...

  1. Maybe you should just wait until Sunday and get a Sunday paper. They are always really really big.. Of course all that junk mail works really well too..
Good luck on your packing it will be well worth it when you get to the farm...

  2. We're having a ball reading your blog. Good luck with the move! When the going gets tough, we use clothes for packing materials (especially t-shirts, which we always have an unreal number of lying around the house).

  3. That is something to ponder.....we don't take a newspaper either.
I love the T-shirt idea, kathryn and ari.
I too have three books waiting for me to read but when I sit down I want to knit right now. Hubby needs a wool hat because he's wearing mine!

  4. I think curling up with a book is more fun then packing, anyday. At first glance of your couch witht the dog, it looks like your dog is a pillow! Funny!
I just read your comment on an older post of mine about my wheelbarrow ;-). My wheelbarrow is about 1 foot deep, with a 2 foot slanted front, and one wheel. I like 2 wheels better(sturdier) but one wheel works for me, for everything from hay to salt blocks, so...
    Have a wonderful day!

  5. We ran into the same problem when we were packing up all of the Christmas ornaments so we ended up using tissue that I had from wrapping. Maybe next year I should save all of the used wrapping paper!
Reading a book is ALWAYS Better than doing anything else!

  6. I would just use the clothes and sheets. That must be moved too in any case. Use the pillows for between the expensive breakables.

  7. Ha! I'd say, start packing up the non-breakables (hmm...the tupperware cabinet?) and go begging when the neighbors are home from work. I never thought about it, but we'd totally have that problem, too.

It must be exciting to be so close to the big day.

  8. Thanks for visiting my blog! Good luck on your move. I hate moving, Mom moved us over 20 times before I finished High School (yes I have mom issues). I've had my chickens for almost 4 years now, love them. I recomend a hardy breed over fancy, they're all pretty anyway. If you have any Q's, dont hesitate to ask, I love talking about them.

  9. I found you from Christy's blog.

Boston has a lot of free papers which are ever so handy for situations like these ones. I hope you resolved the packing after all.

  10. I left a comment for you on my blog, but in case you don't check I wanted to let you know that I have no problem with you talking about my blog here. And I hope your making some progress on packing! That is the part of moving I'm not looking forward to.
