  1. I am so envious of all the help you have there at Critter Farm. I have to do my chores all by myself!

  3. Good job, Danni! I started working out in the garden also, but then the rains came back and I had to quit. Maybe Spring will arrive one of these days.

  4. Wonderful! This post made me laugh because it reminded me of my first flock of hens, who were keeping me company while I planted my first patch of corn. I thought they were so cute and they thought I was so crazy for hiding the corn I was feeding them under the soil, LOL. They clucked and chuckled in a nice little line right behind me, proud to be up to the challenge.

  11. Yay for helpers!

Although I swear that the first time I read about the blueberry patch I read it as "de-Moosed" and I was wondering how the chickens were able to scare off the moose.

My eyes - they aren't what they used to be.

How much spinach is left in the planter, do you think? ;)

  13. George seems to be replacing Roxy as your constant outdoor companion.

Don't the chickens rip up your garden plants/area?

  14. Your helpers look they took great interest in these projects. I get lots of help too ... when I'm working in the goat yards!

  15. what good helpers you have and what a good "straw boss" George makes!! I'll send my 4 y/o by to add to the mix of helpers. She would be just as helpful and wonderfully happy digging in the dirt :)

  16. George is a cat after my own heart. I love a critter that has to be in the thick of things. lol I have to ask why the blueberry bushes need to be de-mossed? Does it affect their growth?

  17. Gosh, with all that great help, no wonder you got so much accomplished!

  19. Paula - Over the winter, mulching keeps them warm. This time of year, I do it to keep the weeds down. Garlic hates weeds.

LindaG - Actually, all the spinach seed remained in the planter - I coaxed Skippy away with some sunflower seeds. :-) My bigger worry now are the wild birds who might be thinking my little spinach seedlings are a tasty treat when they begin to emerge...

Chai Chai - Roxy has been getting into a lot of trouble outside lately when I'm doing other things and not paying complete attention to her, so lately, she's had indoor time while I do my chores outside. She gets to come out when it's goat-walking time and other times when I can pay close attention to her.

The chickens can't get into my veggie garden because it's surrounded by a deer fence (protective netting). They do love to churn up the flower beds, though, and in the summer, when the raspberries and blueberries are ripe, they are quite pleased to help themselves. That's ok, there's enough to go around. :-)

Genny - Technically, I don't think the blueberry patch *needs* to be de-mossed, but it has gotten so thick these last few years of heavy rain that I don't care for how it looks. I'm getting ready to put mulch down around the bushes and I would prefer there not be any moss there. It's more a visual thing for me. It's not like moss doesn't already cover every other surface around here, so I don't mind yanking it from my beloved blueberries .... :-)
