5 pounds lighter

Perhaps you hadn't noticed, but Pete and Reggie have been looking a bit scruffy lately:

With the warmer temperatures, their thick, downy, winter undercoats have started to work their way to the surface of their fur, giving them an unkempt and matted look, especially around their necks. This simply won't do:

It's time for their spring brushing!

Pete went first. Mostly because he was the first to walk by me and I grabbed him:

Ooooh, it felt sooo satisfying to be able to get all this on my brush:

Reggie appeared out of nowhere to provide a comforting t-bone hit to Pete's side:

Then it was Reggie's turn:

Pete reciprocated Reggie's earlier kindness with a neck sniff and repeated nibbling on the brush in my hand:

Reggie was able to relax and tell me all of his problems while I worked the knots out of his neck:

His favorite part, though, was when I just held the brush up against his forehead and he was able to scratch his own itch by moving his head up and down:

Now the boys are sleek and slender looking:

I sure wish a good spring brushing would do this for me.

  2. From what I can see in the photos, you don't have five extra pounds to lose!

  4. I hope you are keeping all that beautiful undercoat (cashmere) for someone to spin.

  5. teddy is going through this right now too. she is about to look 15 pounds skinnier! chows don't shed on an ongoing basis. they drop their undercoat all at once. the birds love it for nest building!

  6. I can't even remember how I found your blog about a month or so ago but it's become one of my favorite reads each day. I love all the critters on your little farm. Thanks.

  7. Wow, they do look alot better after the brushing! I bet they really appreciated it! I bet it makes you happy to make your animals happy! :)

  8. Nothing like a good brushing to make it all a little bit better. :)

  9. Do you SPIN? I'm thinking that soft, undercoat is CASHMERE.

It would be interesting to see it. I have a drum carder and could see if it would card up...

  10. They look great. Can that be spun into yarn?

  11. Such cute babies! That reminds me that I need to get out and brush my goats also. They are "brushing" themselves against any solid object leaving trails of white hair.

  12. Watson had so much it was coming off him in great rolls. Talk about looking disreputable. Oy. The goatmother has been collecting for a couple of years and this year she's going to take it all to have it processed. As we understand it, it doesn't spin well by itself, but works well if combined with regular wool. I guess we'll see. :)

  13. They have to feel so much better now. Having an itch scratched always feels so good.

  14. I'm sure Reggie and Pete are feeling mighty handsome this morning. Amazing how much you were able to get from the brushing. Now I'm curious, after reading other's comments, whether you're going to do anything creative with that "cashmere" wool, or are you going to let the birds have at it?

  15. Oh, dear. How bad am I?
Honestly? I didn't even give that hair a second thought before I put it on a tree branch for the birds to gather for their nests. :-)
It didn't rain last night, though, so I'm sure it's still in the same fluffy condition I left it in. If anybody out there would like me to bundle this ball of softness up and send it to you, I'd be more than happy to do this!

  16. Aww this makes me miss my goat boys! I have been reading your blog for a while and I really enjoy it.
using a regular hairbrush is a great idea. I had two pygmy goats. one of them looked a lot like Pete. what kind of goats are Reggie and Pete?

  17. They look great! Such cute pictures. A few of mine like a good brush but most of them don't have the time to stand still, your guys seem to really enjoy it :)

  19. Hi souriceau! Pete and Reggie are Nigerian Dwarf wethers.
It's funny you mention the brush - last year I spent almost $7 on a fancy goat brush that had tines break off after just the first use. This year, I spent $2.99 on a goody brush and it survived both boys with no problem! :-)

  20. I can't believe your goats let you brush them! LOL that is so great...I would love to brush Harrison our buck he has that really long hair, but no way he would go for that lol.

Yes my niece and nephew really run that fast. They have run their whole lives... making the Olympic Trials is the goal. We are so proud of them! My niece was within one minute and seconds of hitting the qualifying time in this last marathon!

  21. That soft goat hair is valuable! You could be turning it into all kinds of wonderful Christmas presents.

  22. I was gonna ask if you were going to spin that fluffy hair into something wonderful, but someone already beat me to it. I am sure the birdies appreciated Pete and Reggie's fluffy donation to their nest building.

  23. Oh, those adorable goat boys. The goat people here are totally in for a good brushing too... it won't be as fun for Leland and Abigail, but they'll feel so much better afterwards.

I just love your goat boys and how sweet they are!!!

  24. I bet they both feel much better! Kinda reminds me of all the undercoat I get when I brush my Shelties....

  26. When I found this blog about a year ago is when I fell in love with Pete and Reggie and the Nigerian Dwarf breed. I finally have my first Nigerian Dwarf and first ever goat and I am in love!!! Kisses to Pete and Reggie for introducing me to this wonderful breed!!!

  27. Can I ask if Pete and Reggie were bottle babies?

  28. Danni, I'll be breaking out the hairbrush for Gertie - she's starting to get that same scruffy look. Your guys look so sleek - we'll see what it does for ol' Gert. Hope you're well!

  29. Hi LadyC - Of course you can ask! And, hey, I'll even answer!! lol
Pete and Reggie were not bottle babies. In fact, Reggie was so wild when I picked him out, I couldn't even catch him. It took a bit of time for him to warm up, but now he's such a mama's boy, it's ridiculous. :-)

  30. Hi Teri!! Thanks for checking on me! I hope you'll post before/after photos of Gertie - the difference will be amazing!
