June 15th, 2010
So, hey, do you remember my last post? The one that talked about the glorious, sunny weekend we had?
And the post a week or so before that? The one where I said I had made peace with the rain?
Well, this is what June 15th (yesterday) brought us:
As I watched the hail come pounding down, I noticed the temperature drop to 48 degrees. In the middle of June. During the day.
Gutters overflowed:
Some plant damage occurred, although it was less than I expected.
My wee eggplants received big tears in their leaves:
As did the pumpkins:
My hardy Music garlic, however, survived the onslaught with no problem:
Jim's jade plants, that he placed out on the deck a few weeks ago...:
...took a hit, too:
Their sensitive succulent leaves now have pock marks:
That's how hard that nasty hail came down.
Later in the evening, while it wasn't much warmer, we decided we needed a walk:
The air was clean and cold and everything had a "just washed" feeling about it:
I don't think that Pete, Reggie and Roxy noticed this, though. They were just happy to be outside:
Just as a small P.S., yesterday set a record for the wettest June here in the past 70 years, with 4" of rain so far this month. But I'm at peace with it. I just keep telling myself this. :-)

Oh I understand about the rain. It was nice here yesterday and it has poured rain here today all day long. I myself don't usually mind the rain but I am starting to grow weary of it. We had an ususual dry fall and winter so I suppose I should be grateful for all this moisture. I think being located close to me you are sending us your weather. LOL
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable! Absolutely unbelievable! All I can say is that I'm delighted you're at peace with it. :)
ReplyDeleteOh dear. Hail. In June. Thats just not right.
ReplyDeleteThose poor little leaves. But they will recover. Im sad to say that my little eggplant did not make it. :-(
I think a walk was for sure in order after all that hail mayhem.
Youre totally at peace with it. Yep. Totally. Totally peaceful. You did make a flower sacrifice after all...
Hail or no hail, you have a beautiful, beautiful yard & garden!
ReplyDeleteWow Danni, that was some hailstorm you had! Too bad that your plants got damaged. I hate that. We had cooler weather here today than last week, but no rain or hail. I love the view of your gardens in your video. Your place must be really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteNo nail on my side, but still ugly and nasty and COLD!!!!! Glad I had the plants covered because the 32 degree weather SUCKED!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHang in there Miss "good side of the mountain"
:)
Wow, you sure are having a hell of a June, I think weatherwise the months totally got mixed up, like we had the hottest April and then May was a washout. The thing I noticed too, it's not just raining, even here, it's pouring. Well there is always hope for better weather.
ReplyDeleteWow for a moment, I thought you had created a Zen Garden. Mother Nature can be destructive in so many ways, here's hoping your pumpkins bounce back.

i'll still trade weather with you. day after day it is 90 degrees, humid and awful with no break in sight. i just watched the morning news and an extremely chippy weather girl announced that we can expect higher temps this coming week. i almost spit at the tv....i felt like a llama!
ReplyDeleteThat's quite the hailstorm! Glad it was not any bigger. I sympathize... last year we were in the same boat (snort) with the rainiest June on record. And July. I have flashbacks every time it rains here, (like today). Hope you have a weather pattern change soon!
ReplyDeleteWe have had lots of rain here too...I keep telling myself not to complain, even though my tomatoes have turned yellow, because around here every rain could be the last one for months! It sure is beautiful at your place!
ReplyDeleteI know you must be tired of the rain, but gosh, I can't take my eyes off all the green surrounding your place. It is exactly what i picture when I think Oregon.
ReplyDeletei'm fed up with the cold and rain. there. i said it. i'm not sure my garden is going to catch up.
ReplyDeleteI remember whole summers in Sweden like that, rain, rain and more rain. Nothing much to do but to make peace with it. The good thing about rain is the green landscape you just can't get without it. And your place is gorgeous!--Inger
ReplyDeleteHang in there.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why long periods of rain can be so troublesome to humans? I mean I know about SAD and everything, but what is it about our evolution that makes it a problem?
The goat brothers off leash? They must mind really well. It's amazing they aren't as big as houseboats with all that green grass to eat.
Well, look on the bright side. At least you aren't having to water. :) Me, I'm holding out for a set of water wings.
ReplyDeleteThey don't call this the Wet Coast for nothin'. It's gotta stop sometime, right? Should we be building an ark or something....?
ReplyDeleteNo doubt about it, the weather has been kind of wacky this year. I'm wondering if we all just need to "make peace with it" as it seems its not going to go back to "normal" anytime soon. Sorry about your plants, but I'm glad they survived and there wasn't any worse damage.
ReplyDeleteAarghh!! That's awful. I mean peaceful. It's peaceful.
ReplyDeleteWe went below freezing her last night. 31 degrees. I lost a chick, even eith the lights on them. I am not peaceful at all this morning.
If that hailstorm hadn't dumped all its hail on you I would be crying bitterly right now. We didn't get any over here south of Portland. (Are you at a higher elevations than 50 meters?) Thank goodness. My zukes and summer squash are putting out flowers now, and hail would have completely destroyed them. My peppers, which did get hammered in the hail at the beginning of the month are barely hanging in there.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope your stuff recovers okay!
That is unreal. You have had the craziest weather. Talk about being at the mercy of mother nature. I can't complain here although it would be nice to have a light rain once in a while.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine what it must be like to be a hummingbird during that Danni? Poor things. I hope they found shelter in your barn!!!
ReplyDeleteLove that last picture....I think Julie needs a goat!
That was some hail storm. Wisconsin has been unusually wet this June also. More rainy days than sunny. And when it rains here it is not a gentle rain but always a drenching downpour. I am forever raking garden soil back into the gardens and trying to salvage damaged plants. Let's hope Mother Nature gives us all a break soon. By the way your garden is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow, my mom had 4 1/2 inch hail at her house the other day. Can you imagine? Yikes.
ReplyDeleteWow, my mom had 4 1/2 inch hail at her house the other day. Can you imagine? Yikes.
ReplyDeletewow! that is wild.
ReplyDeleteI do love it after the rain when it is cooler and everything has that washed feeling. That truly is peaceful. So maybe as your trying to make peace with the rain just keep focusing on all the peaceful things that come after the rain (green plants, rainbows, good smells, cool breeze, washed earth...)
hang in there!
