Roxy and Chester

Roxy, my farm pup, is a great big dog personality in a little tiny, prissy white dog body:

Chester, my donkey, is a pushy, alpha male donkey personality in a smaller, compact, feisty donkey body:

Roxy is a smart girl and is extremely wary of the big animals. It's interesting to watch her around them because she always 1) maintains her distance and 2) uses classic non-threatening body language (averting her eyes, turning her body away) when she is in close proximity to them, even when certain bigger, pushier animals are trying to get her attention:

"Hey, you...little DOG!":

No matter what amount of noise or snuffling Chester makes, Roxy will NOT look:

Chester tries to get closer, but Roxy is suddenly fascinated with the ground: "Hmmm....now this is an interesting dirt smell...":

Nope, not gonna look:

Chester can't quite figure out why she won't interact with him:

So the big boy tries a new technique:

This is his classic "scratch my butt" maneuver, used to win over the most die-hard donkey-resistant folks. Still not working, though:

Chester looks to me for help. "Does she really not know I'm here?":

So now they both pretend not to care:

On the other side of the fence, things appear pretty much the same:

Clearly, we're at a bit of an impasse:

Beau, my gray donkey, can't take this ridiculous situation any longer and comes up to talk some sense into Chester:

Apparently it works, because they both suddenly decide they'll benefit more from some cute carrot-begging:

I mean, who can resist faces like these?:

I know I can't:

Roxy, however...

...continues to feign complete disinterest:

I could watch these guys for hours - can you tell that I sometimes do?

  2. I think that I like donkey faces better than horse faces. They're way cuter.

  3. Wow, that Roxy has a strong nonchalant disposition ... such control. That's hilarious! I don't blame you for wanting to watch these guys for hours ... I'd be right there with you.

  4. Just found your blog and love your stories. Roxy is a hoot, what a good choice you made to move out to the country. We did the same eight years ago, and it was the best thing we ever did.

    I'll be back!

  6. Excellent! Years ago as a child there used to be a programme on TV called Animal Magic, Johnny Morris dressed as a zoo keeper would talk to the animals, and he would do these great voices for them so you thought they were talking back. I loved it but they stopped showing itm apparently it was misleading us poor kiddies onto thinking animals really talked! Well they do don't they? Yours do :D

  10. I would find watching your animals doing what they are doing much more fun than going to "work" any time. You are lucky to have them.

  14. Danni - I love your blow by blow commentary. I always enjoy your posts. Sorry for not commenting much, I don't get online a lot, and when I do it's for a short time at my friend's home before we go out and work in the gardens. I'm glad I got to spend this morning moment with you and your critters. Take care, from Casey Co KY.

  16. Man alive, Roxy is good! She's a smart farm pup.
The donkey butt, pushed through and sitting on the fence rail is priceless. Please tell me you scratched it.

  17. Animals are so amazing! The calming signals are amazing too. I think it's fascinating how they transcend species.

And those donkey boys of yours are quite the pair.

  21. HILLLLLARIOUS!!!! I laughed till I cried! Still have watery eyes. I don't know..I find things more amusing when I'm tired, and I'm pretty tired, but I think even if I'd had 48 hours of sleep and then read this I'd still have watery eyes from laughing!

  22. Donkey faces just have so much more character than horses!! Danni, this little story would make a cute little children's story...if you're ever inclined ;)What would we do without our animals??

  24. hi danni! i would be carrotless if i owned those two. very funny about roxy. i wonder what would happen if she looked them right in the eye. teddy would have no problem staring them down. she killed a feral cat in our yard yesterday. it was awful for me and the best experience of her life. ugh!

  26. Long time follower, first time poster here.
Danni, this is why I check in with your blog nearly daily. I live the farm girl life through your blog. This one is classic!

  27. This is a about the funniest "dog-and-pony" show I've ever seen! How could Roxy not look at that donkey butt squooshing against the fence, almost coming through? They are both clowns, and they know they had an extremely captive audience.
It's great to start the day with a big laugh.

  28. I know exactly where you're coming from Danni! I watched the interaction between our neighbor dog and donkeys posted here: http://sunnysideup-eve.blogspot.com/2010/09/walking-with-neighbors.html and photographed a conversation between them. It was amazing!! There must be a close link in communication between the species! Great post!

  29. This is just what the Dog Whisperer teaches us to do when we meet a new dog: No talk, No touch, No eye contact. And Roxie is just trying to show Dexter some good dog manners. This may well be the greatest blog post I have ever seen. Wow!

  30. That's so funny! My dog-hating QH mare does the same thing when our Dane isn't looking at her. Our Dane just wants to love her and be friends and play! Poor Roxie doesn't understand that Molly the Mare would rather kick her in a heartbeat than make friends.

Good girl, little Roxy, for using good doggie manners!

  31. They are just beautiful. Roxie is too of course :) They look like my Otis and Elmer :)
