I need a bite of that - or - how to make new friends, part 1

If you ever find yourself desperate to make a new friend, here are a few tips on how to go about it from Chester the donkey. This is a tried and true method, so please don't hesitate to use it when needed.

First, identify your target, er, potential new friend:

Slowly sneak up on them:

If they see you before you are ready, pretend to be interested in something else:

Don't be too concerned if they are taller or look different than you:

Look friendly and hold very still if they approach you:

Lean in for a sniff:

Don't take it personally if they don't warm to you right away:

It's ok to up the ante and move in a bit closer:

And, at this point, it is also entirely appropriate to taste a bit of the snack they've been carrying around:

Pay close attention to the subtle signs indicating whether or not they are receptive to your methods:

If, at the end, ears are upright and you haven't been spat at, you're doing well. Repeat these steps as needed until you have won your new friend over:

  6. Dani, So happy you have a donkey again. Chester looks like he fits right in to your world. Would have sent you Franny, but Ohio to Oregon is a bit of a haul. Nice to see that your critters all get along. Must be good management.

P.S. Saw the Roberts Roost link was broken (long story) You can find me at http://www.robertsroostfarm.com/
    Cheers, Alan

  7. I am SO happy that they have met and seem to get along. I knew Chester's charm and good looks would prevail and that the llama ladies would succumb. Can't wait to see them play!

  13. Snort. This was so funny when Chester just helped himself to Toni's snack. The snack that she was so very intently holding on to. All the way from the barn to the path to the pasture...and then she stood there holding onto it even longer still. I think it was a source of comfort to her...Shes very loving that Toni.
And Chester. Hes such a sweet boy...I think hes winning those llamas over...little by little..even if they keep changing their minds about him...spit...and no spit...spit...and no spit.

  18. Off subject just a bit..are the llamas sheared in the spring? Is that something you get to do? or does someone else from the group take care of it. I have been wanting to meet and alpaca for quite some time, but it just doesn't come together. I think I just have to make it happen...and soon.

  19. Bet that wouldn't work if it were a Peanut they were carrying around in their mouth. Betcha'!

  20. Llamas are so cool. I really want one. In addition to the rest of the ark...Chester will be best buds with them in no time. He's obviously a warm, tender character.
