My baby is growing a beard

It seems like only yesterday that I brought Pete and Reggie, my two Nigerian Dwarf baby goats, home:

And, really, it was just in May but look at how tiny little Pete was back then:

Now, at only five months old, look what's sprouting on Pete's chin:

Judging from the looks of Pete's daddy, Sugar Creek MT Tell Me More (aka "Telly"):

....Pete is going to be sporting one fine looking beard in no time:

I like beards.

  1. Niiice!!!

Is beard length and fullness influenced by testosterone? (or the lack of it?)

  3. In general, I prefer mustaches to beards, but since it's your baby Pete, I'll keep an open mind...

  6. I had just gotten used to one grandson with a beard.....
So Reggie doesn't believe in facial hair? Or all the good, nourishing protein in his yummy food must be going to his girth?

  7. I am so jealous. I keep trying to grow a beard, but I just can't seem to get it done correctly. Well, I guess some have it and some don't.

  8. Uh, isn't Pete a wether? It depends on wether or not he is as to how big a beard he'll likely get. It won't be as fantastic as his daddy's but still quite handsome I'm sure. ;-)

  10. Hi Sarah - yes, I do believe that a certain amount of beard growth can be attributed to testosterone in a goat, but with that said, I have also seen some female goats, does, with some pretty impressive beards, too! lol. Pete's a wether, so his growth will likely be much less, um, bushy, than his Pa's, but it's still clear he's got the beard "gene". :-)

Hi Zitrone - I had thought about posting a pic of Reggie in this post to show his definite LACK of beard growth, but decided to keep it about Pete. Reggie has no sign of anything - maybe his little beard is yet to come, but those two boys are as different as night and day!

Hello Rural Writer - yes, Pete's a wether and I agree with you - it's unlikely that Pete's beard will ever be as MAGNIFICENT as his dad's, but it would seem Pete did still acquire a bit of the hairy-gene from his dad, don't you think? :-)

  16. Sigh....Little Pete is growing up. I just dont know if Im ready for all that yet. I think, tho, no matter how old he is...he will still have a thing for hats!

Well, seeings how Reggie sometimes can push little Pete around ...I think him growing a beard is just what he needs.

You show him, Pete. You may not be growing a little buddha belly, but a beard is equally as nice.

2 handsome little guys is what they are!
