The rodent story...but I really want to talk about something else

Ok. I know I said I'd tell the rodent story if you wanted to hear it, but honestly?  It's not that exciting of a story.

I mean, so what if Carson and I went out at night... :
armed with flashlights and cameras... :
(embarrassingly, it turns out I was the only one in my pajamas, heh):
to find the creature that had been bedding down with the hens at night:
Only, we found nothing but chickens (trying to sleep):
And each other... at the opposite ends of the coop:
"Hey Carson.."
"Hey Danni..."
And, ok, so we did find eventually find the chicken-coop-squatter.  Squatting outside the chicken coop.  But it was all very anticlimactic: it was just an itsy bitsy mouse with great big ears.  Hardly worth all the drama, right?

Well, except for the fact that the 7MSN hens caught him and ate him up today:
That was exciting.  (They sure do make chickens different in New Mexico.)  And that's all I'm going to say about that.

But here.. this is the incredible thing I really want to talk about...

Look at our friend, George.  He wore a saddle for the first time ever today... :
And, ohmygosh, he was such a star.  Not only was he completely relaxed wearing that saddle, he had no problem taking both Carson:
and me for a ride:

Alan stuck very close and observed everything his buddy was doing:
At the end of his first-ever riding lesson, George got so much love and praise:
And then he took a long nap:
He totally deserved it.

  2. He is a superstar! My chickens love to catch mice and eat them. The first time I saw it, I was a little stunned but now I find it kind of amusing in a strange way.

  3. Oh well, I suppose I asked for it (the rodent story).

George sure looks great with that saddle. All this time he has been a riding donkey in disguise? Or is this a bit of sibling rivalry with Lucy?

  4. Hooray for the hens! No stinkin' mouse is gonna get to share their food.
I'm totally floored by George not caring one bit about saddle and riding. He must trust Carson in ways no one understands completely.

  5. Just goes to show - don't mess with 'dem hens in the coop much less think you might get some of their food! George totally is a star look at that good boy! Glad you are having fun.

  10. I know of a dog that is going to JEALOUS when she hears the mouse story. That was Eugenia, the painting chicken, right? George is a smart boy..learning by example. I bet Alan might be a different story. What a fun vacation.

George, you are amazing. You deserve a treat of watermelon for allowing mom and Danni to saddle and ride. Such a good boy!!

I think chickens eat just about anything. Linda's chickens aren't picky about what they eat.

  12. That's awesome news about George...but, Aaaak! Those chickens are bloodthirsty little creatures. Yikes.

  13. George lives on one fun farm. That'll teach them mice! Mine are better at chasing the rats through the fields than cats. Less rats, more corn for us. Gotta love them chickens.

  14. Who knew that chickens could be such good mousers? And I bet they eat ticks, too. (Barn cats may find themselves out of a job...)

And George. What a GOOD boy you are. Having an extra riding donkey could mean lots of trail riding fun with a friend in your future!

  16. I must say, you have a nice action shot of chickens doing what they do best..,but I have VIDEO!! My ladies flipped that little mousie up in the air several times to see where the "open" button was. Eventually the tug of war method helped them find it. I envy your farm girl life! I hope to have more than chickens some day.

  17. A great holiday was had by all including the critters. Carson needs to get a coffee pot that shuts off after 2 hours. I can't remember to shut mine off so now with a techie coffee pot I'm safe. Loved all the stories this past week.
    Best always, Sandra

  23. Wow! Don't mess with those hens! Mine will eat all types of bugs and those ugly tomato horn worms, but I've never noticed them attacking mice. Maybe my new girls will be different...Hmmm.

  25. I have a friend who discovered a mouse family in the back of her Expedition; needless to say she fed the momma and the babies to her friends' chickens! So chickens do eat rodents and other things.
As for George....I'm a huge fan of the 7MSN, and I'm jealous you got to visit the burrito brothers!

  26. Another wonderful adventure Danni, thank you for taking us along. How I would love to visit 7MSN Farm and meet George and his friends. Yup, my gal Gladys devoured a mouse, would not have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes! Give Roxy a pat from her friends in Maine.

  28. Oh dear. There goes my entire circle of life diagram. I never realized that chickens ate mice. I thought that was a falcon thing.

Woo hoo about George! I had no idea he was in training for saddle time! YAY!
