Do you think three are too many?

Well, I couldn't stand the sight of Reggie lording it over Pete on the one new wooden spool I brought home last week so, on Tuesday, I went back to my new friend, Gary, at the Verizon transfer station and picked up the two remaining spools there.

First, though, they had to remove some leftover cabling off of one. The man on the right is Gary. I don't know the man on the left but he seemed to have heard about me. He asked me whether I had brought cookies again:

Hating to disappoint and rather embarrassed, I told him that this time I had only brought a cashew bar and a cream soda for Gary, but that I'd be sure to remember him "the next time". Fortunately for me, he was still willing to help load the spool into my truck:

Both boys couldn't have been happier that Jim and I had hoisted yet more interesting items into their run and exchanged a look of goat glee:

Reggie, of course, instigated the head butting to clarify spool ownership:

...but now that there are three spools, this conversation became unimportant and focus quickly shifted to asking me why I wasn't giving them any carrot coins:

"Seriously, mom, why aren't you?":

They've become quite good at the silent stare-down, too:

By the way, are you noticing Pete's beard? It has taken on a definite Fu Manchu appearance, wouldn't you say?:

When it became clear that no carrot coins were immediately forthcoming, the activity changed to spool jumping:

Fun for a bit, but Pete soon decided a snack was more interesting and went back into the goat house:

...leaving Reggie, again, alone and happy on top of a new spool:

These boys now have so many climbing options, their little run is looking, well, little. I see a goat run expansion project (GREP) moving to the top of my spring to-do list. Don't tell my husband - he gets nervous when I start talking about new fencing. :-)

Thank you for the many suggestions I received recommending that I cover the holes on the tops of the spools for goat-safety-sake. I will be doing this a.s.a.p., as well as attaching some of our roofing shingles to the tops to give the boys some traction. I did this for their old platform and walkway and it works great. It is so wet here in the winter and spring, all the surfaces tend to quickly become mossy and slick as ice.

  1. I love it. After your other post I immediately called a friend that works at AT&T. He's looking into getting me a few. Woohoo.

    (GREP) OMG, too funny.

  6. Goats are the ultimate! Yes, I just love the Fu Man Chu look ;-) That's a great idea about the shingles on top of the spools. I'll remember that when we finally get goats.

  7. I think 3 is the perfect number. I was worried that with two, that Reggie would spend his whole time chasing Pete from the first to the second. This way, it's just too much work.
Pete's fu manchu is rockin! I have this propensity to braid long hair on animals. My dogs are not amused.

  9. The boys look like they're having the time of their lives. They're soooo adorable! Yup, love Pete's beard. You do such a great job of sharing your critters' personalities in your posts, Danni!

  10. Pete should be glad he has only Reggie and not some hogesque-goat like Ella. Three is definitely a good number. By the way, Watson is SO jealous of Pete.

  11. ok...adding giant cable spools to my list of "get for the goats" one day! That looks so fun. Left me kind of wanting to get out there and jump around with them!

  12. No- I think three leaves the option for somewhere else to go if your current spool is being attacked. Three is good.

  13. "goat glee" and "GREP" ha ha! You are funny and imaginative! I love those pictures of your goat boys. Your posts make me smile. What kind of cookies did you bring Gary the first time?

  14. I have started my spool search... my thinking is that you should so take a whole batch of cookies to those guys over there ... these things are like looking for a needle in a haystack..yep I would so take the cookies even though you have your spools!!

  18. Spool jumping is the best! The new girl hasn't discovered the spools yet. I can't wait until she does.

  19. Wow, I must find some spools! Glad to see them having such fun - I know mine would too. I've been wondering about your llama skin issue - any improvement? It did take a while for our Hazel to improve, but there were little tiny fissures in her skin that would bleed a little and that was the first thing to get better. Then the flakiness dissipated, and then the fur began to grow back. Hope yours will also improve soon...

  20. Three spools and two goats.... Might have to get one per spool so the other spool isn't left out.

  21. Three spools are great. Keeps em moving and guessing. Goats are smart and this will give them something to figure out. Just don't get the spools too close to the fence or you might find a striped garden and two bloated goats.
    Love the Fu Manchu beard...

  22. Gosh, I haven't been blog visiting in a long while. You've got all kinds of interesting things going on! Love the spools for the goats. And the bat in the barn attic. And that you found your earring! Never a dull moment, eh?

  23. You post the best pictures. Pete and Reggie look so happy on their new spools. I just love the head tilt shot! And the one picture looks like they were chasing each other in a circle hopping from one to the other.

I LOVE Pete's Fu Manchu! It looks incredibly handsome on him.

  24. I was driving by a place (never bothered to see what business it was)that I drive by alot and I looked to the back and there were hords of spools!! Hummmmm! I instantly thought of you Danni! If I ever get a mini goat now I know where to get my spools....I wonder if they would make good places to sit in the woods? I need that for sure.
The boys are adorable and that beard is quite a fashion statement!

  25. They look like they are having too much fun.....can I come over and play, too? Maybe - just maybe - they might share with me a bit!

Ditto "morningbrayfarm's" quote - you are so talented to capture and narrate your sweet animals' personalities. Makes me smile :)

  26. 3 now, huh? I think thats a great number. So when you have little goats come over to play they can have all kinds of spools to run and play on. What? You totally may have a goat play date some day. Im just sayin.
And why does it not surprise me that you treated your spool guys so wonderfully and took them cookies....I love this.

  27. I moseyed over here from the 7MSN and I'm really enjoying your blog. Your little goats look like they provide you as much entertainment as Carson's burro's.... Love it. Thanks for sharing.
