The vistor goes home

As I mentioned in my previous post, we found a lost chicken the other day. In all honesty, I was fairly certain this little hen was here to stay and, once the quarantine period was over, we would be adding a new member to our existing flock. Well, guess what? Despite our earlier beliefs, it turns out that I'm not the only chicken keeper in the neighborhood.

The vineyard up the hill from us is run by a family who just recently acquired their first chickens. The man left a message on my phone yesterday saying, "We lost a chicken. I heard you found a chicken and I'm wondering if it's the same one." It was.

So Roxy, my farm pup, and I packed the hen back up into the travelling crate and put her in the truck. Back to her home we went:

Here's her real home. Sorry for the blurriness. I'm apparently losing my ability to take a decent photo:

That sweet hen is part of a trio of Black Stars. Once out of the crate, she never even looked back. She was EXTREMELY happy to return to her free-ranging gal pals:

When last seen, the threesome was happily pecking at bugs, grass and fallen apples:

They aren't sure how she escaped or why she ran as far as she did, but I was given a lovely bottle of wine as thanks for caring for her:

And then it was time to go back home:

Bye, little visiting chicken. Thanks for the excitement. And the two eggs.

  1. A little mid-week excitement, a couple of eggs, a bottle of wine, the satisfaction of doing a good deed, something to blog about...what more could you ask for?

  2. Awwww...Hi sweet Roxy girl. I sure do miss you. :)

So, the visiting chicken ended up just visiting after all. Well, Im happy that she was happy to be back with her chicken pals. I hope she gets to snack on those lovely looking grape leaves.

And what better place to have a little visit than right there at Critter Farm. I think it was very sweet of her to thank her lovely hostess by gifting her with two pretty eggs. No way would she ever take raspberries from the "saved for jam jar". :)

  9. What fun and adventure! A chicken visitor, a vineyard, a new friend, a bottle of wine, a short road trip for you and Roxy and a great blog post. The hen looked very happy to be back with her friends. You are a good neighbor and chicken mama.

  10. How funny! I also acquired a lost chicken this week. Someone actually went into our back yard and put her in the chicken yard. I'm sure it was one of our neighbors assuming it was ours that had escaped. I'm starting to get attached so I hope someone claims her soon if they are going to.

  14. Awwww. That sweet little girl had a nice visit with you, I'm sure. What a beautiful vineyard! It looks like she's well cared for there - pretty coop. And it looks like you got a nice bottle of wine. You're a wonderful neighbor - but now that she knows how fun visiting Critter Farm is, they may have to watch she doesn't bring her sisters down for a visit!

  17. Well done! I'm glad to see she was reunited with her family, although I'm sure you and Roxy will miss her. It's always nice to have a friend who owns a winery. That was mighty neighbourly of them to give you a bottle of wine. With any luck, your new Hen Pal will drop by for another visit soon!
