A winter solstice.... egg

Today, on the shortest day of the year, one of my girls laid me an egg. It's a pretty egg, very smooth and perfectly shaped.

It caused quite a stir when I set it out on the dining room table:

It was examined from all sides:

Soon, an individual portrait was requested:

Then another:

and another:

and, before I knew it, everyone was in line for one:

That's what happens when a chicken lays an egg on what is going to be the longest night of the year.

Oh, you pretty, little 1.9 ounce orb of perfection, your appearance never ceases to amaze me:

  1. Oh my gosh. This is so cute. I thought I was the only one who gets excited about a perfect egg. Now I know I'm not alone.
Merry Christmas and may the New Year bring this kind of excitement with every egg that's laid.
Do you tell the Hen about this? She would be so proud.

  6. You are too funny! And creative. My old hen gave me an egg last year on Winter Solstice. I think it's a chicken tradition. Giving Solstice egg gifts. A beautiful egg Danni!

  16. Fun with Eggs should be the name of your NPR program. This looks like a skit from Saturday Night Live.

  27. I don't know why, but this reminds me of the puppet shows we used to do together. Never a script, the characters told their own stories. Your snow people have more to say before the year is out, I'm sure.

One of your very best posts ever!
